How Pilates Will Improve Your Yoga Practice

[adinserter block=”1″]

If you’ve never tried a Pilates class, or are wondering why you might want to have both practices in your wellness routine, read on to hear why we are so excited to be offering both yoga and mat Pilates.

One focus of both modern yoga and Pilates is spinal health; both can create more mobility and stability in the spine. Where Pilates can really elevate your yoga practice, is with its powerful focus on core stability where you learn to engage and move from your deeper core muscles. Better core stability = a safer lifelong yoga practice, and safer movement through your day-to-day life!

In Power Living Pilates classes, you’ll integrate your muscles, body and breath in a different and complementary way to your yoga classes. Pilates provides a full-body workout that builds more muscular endurance by switching on stabilising muscles that sometimes don’t get worked in a flowing, vinyasa yoga class. The repetitive movements of Pilates, and the fuller engagement of the deep core, will contribute to better posture, spinal health, and strength.

“If your spine is inflexibly stiff at 30, you are old. If it is completely flexible at 60, you are young. ”
– Joseph Pilates

Power Living founder Duncan Peak explains, “Modern Yoga, in all its forms, is an amazing practice for the body and mind, but excessive focus on flexibility has, like all athletic endeavours, shortfalls.” The shortfall here is if we rely too heavily on our passive range of motion, and don’t work to stabilise our joints and train our active range of motion, we’re not optimising our body’s ability to be both mobile, and strong. With the repetitious training in classical and modern Pilates styles, we can further help to bulletproof our bodies for our yoga asana practice, and all our athletic endeavours. Pilates can positively impact all the ways in which we move through our world.

In short, Power Living Pilates is the balancing practice of Modern Yoga to ensure a passive range of motion and muscle flexibility are balanced by more joint stability and muscular strength.

As a Power Living member, all Pilates classes are included in your current membership! You can expect a challenging, fun, inspiring and functional 45-minute full-body workout that fuses classical and modern Pilates with Functional Mobility Training.
